403 graduates receive their Degrees
“Convocation 2011” was held at BITS Pilani, Dubai Campus under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Majid bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum on Sunday, 11th September 2011 for its eighth batch of graduating students. His Excellency Humaid Mohamed Obaid Al Qutami, Minister of Education, Government of U.A.E graced the ceremony. The Degrees were conferred on 403 Graduates who graduated in the following disciplines of Engineering; Chemical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering and Biotechnology. Of the total 403 students, 289 are boys and 114 are girls.

His Excellency Humaid Mohamed Obaid Al Qutami awarded the Toppers of Class of 2010 and 2011 with Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals at the ceremony. Ms. Ankita Lamba was the proud recipient of the Director’s Medal for All-Round excellence (Female) and Mr. Chougle Shams Mohammed Ali received the Medal for All-Round excellence (Male). The DIAC Academic Excellence Award was given to Sparsh Mittal and Nikul Dinesh Kumar Agarwal who were the academic toppers of this year.
The Vice Chancellor Prof. Bijendra Nath Jain gave the welcome address and presented the Convocation report on the occasion of Convocation 2011. In his report, he said, “BITS is invariably ranked amongst the top 10 publicly or privately funded engineering institutions in India, as also among the top in the UAE. Going forward, we aspire to be listed as a top-class research-led university in Asia and in the world, and not simply in India or UAE. And to realize that dream we have begun to define and implement a number of projects under the umbrella project called "Vision 2020, Mission 2012" that will enhance our capability and capacity to run a world-class university whose faculty and students excel in both teaching or learning and in research or innovation.”In a videographed address, Chancellor Dr Kumar Mangalam Birla, a leading industrialist and a global business leader called upon the graduating students to work with passion and determination. “Bring passion to your endeavors, bring the fire in you and the sparkle in your eyes to every task you set yourself to” said the Chancellor. He said that the opportunities in India, U.A.E and the world are limitless and he called upon the young graduates to grab them and shape their lives and shape the world. “Just as BITS Pilani’s reputation has been shaped by the quality of men and women who walked through its portals, you will shape BITS’s reputation in the coming years”, he added. Chancellor congratulated the graduating students and wished them very best in their lives, both personal and professional.
Prof. Dr. R. K. Mittal, Director, BITS Pilani, Dubai Campus congratulated the graduates on their successful completion of their programs, and said, “BITS Pilani, Dubai Campus has been tirelessly working to fulfill its mission of imparting quality education to the students in the gulf region and selfless service to the society.” He added that this convocation stands out in reaffirming the commitment to develop technical and scientific manpower in the region.
Including the 403 students who graduated this year, a total of 1743 students have graduated from BITS Pilani, Dubai Campus till date. Several graduates have obtained admission to Masters and PhD programmes at more than 65 highly reputed institutions such as Stanford, Cornell, Columbia, Johns Hopkins, Carnegie Mellon in the USA; the University of Toronto, Canada; University of Manchester, UK; Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, University of Melbourne, Australia etc.
The remaining students are well-placed in more than 400 highly reputed companies such as Microsoft, Sony Ericsson, Oracle etc. in the USA; Siemens, J Ray McDermott, Larsen and Toubro Emirates Airlines, Baker Hughes, MAERSK etc. in the UAE; and Infosys, Dell, Wipro, Tata Consultancy etc. in India and many companies from other countries.

A large gathering comprising the graduating students, their parents, guests from the industry and faculty and staff of BITS Pilani, Dubai Campus attended the grand ceremony. Dr. Abdulla Al Karam, Director General, Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), Mr. Syed. M. Salahuddin, Managing Director, ETA Ascon group and Vice Chairman, Governing Council, BITS Pilani, Dubai Campus ; Mr. Essa Al Ghurair, Director – ETA Ascon Group were among the several guests present on the occasion. The Directors of BITS Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad campus, Prof. K.E. Raman, Prof. V.S. Rao and Dr. M.M.S. Anand, Registrar of BITS Pilani flew in for the solemn occasion.
